Lufthansa-JetBlue Partnership

Lufthansa, the largest foreign carrier serving Israel, announced last week a partnership with low-cost carrier JetBlue.

JetBlue passengers originating in 11 U.S. cities and San Juan, Puerto Rico, will enjoy one-stop reservations and seamless baggage transfer to Lufthansa’s network of more than 400 destinations worldwide, according to a release.

Travelers flying JetBlue from these cities, including Buffalo, Syracuse and Ft. Lauderdale, will be able to connect via New York/JFK or Boston onto Lufthansa flights bound for Germany and beyond, including top cities like Delhi, Madrid, Rome, Tel Aviv and Zurich.

“Customers of both airlines now have even more travel options available to them when flying to Europe and Israel, with a more convenient transfer process at JFK and Boston airports,” said Tal Muscal, press relations adviser for Lufthansa in Israel, in a statement.

Flights can be booked on lufthansa.com, via a link on www.jetblue.com.

Lufthansa is barred from a takeover of JetBlue under current American laws restricting foreign ownership of a domestic airline to 25 percent, although two Lufthansa executives sit on JetBlue’s board. JetBlue is a large part of JFK’s air travel business as well as the JFK Airport Parking and JFK Long Term Parking reservations or what have you. The carriers’ two chief executives are understood to have a warm personal relationship and have been exploring ways to do more business together.
